Characters

Body depth 2.3% to 4.9%, head length 13% to 16.5%, snout length 7.6% to 9.4% SL. Premaxilla with 3 or 4 depressible canine teeth anteriorly and 16 to 28 fixed teeth posteriorly. Lower jaw with 9 fixed canine teeth in outer series and 9 depressible teeth in inner series. Vomer lacks teeth. Palatine with 3 or 4 depressible canine teeth anteriorly and 4 to 6 fixed uniserial canine teeth posteriorly. First gill arch with 2 or 3 'gill teeth' on epibranch, 1 in corner, 18 to 23 on lower limb, and 3 or 4 on hypobranch. Pectoral fin with 11 or 12 rays. Dorsal fin with 10 rays. Pelvic fin with 8 or 9 rays. Luminous organs absent. Scales absent except for embedded lateral line scales. Lateral line scale sections elliptical, 86 to 92 in number. Tympana Y-shaped. Vertebrae 111 to 114.
Body lightly pigmented with series of alternating dorsal and ventral spots, mid-dorsal band from head to caudal fin, and spots on midventral region. Larvae and juveniles have 16 to 18 peritoneal spots.

Distribution

Western Atlantic off eastern United States, from about 40°N, to the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.
