Characters

Spindle shaped, with relatively large dorsal and anal fins. Head is strongly convex and has prominent serrated ridges. Snout profile is blunt but does not extend beyond lower jaw. Single supramaxilla on dorsal margin of maxilla is triangular shaped and has two or more rows of spines along ventral edge. Gill rakers on first arch number 12 to 15 on epibranch and 25 to 27 on lower limb. Head length is 36%, length of upper jaw is 23% to 26%, postorbital length of head is 18% to 21%, and snout to pelvic fin origin is 40% to 44% of SL. Pectoral fin has 12 or 13 rays. Dorsal fin has one to three weak spines and 11 to 13 rays. Pelvic fin is subabdominal. Anal fin usually has one to three weak spines and 11 or 12 rays. Caudal fin has 9 to 11 procurrent rays above, and 8 to 11 procurrent rays below, caudal peduncle. Scales are small, rectangular or oval shaped, with six to eight moderate-sized spines on posterior field. Vertebrae number 31 to 33.
