Distribution

New York to Venezuela, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea
Gulf of Mexico, though it is uncommon there

Habitat Associations

Subtropical waters; daytime depths range from 600 to 800 m, and nighttime depths range from 51 to 500 m

Biology

Maximum known size is 65 mm SL
Maturity is reached at about 40 mm SL
High-oceanic species found between 1-800 m during the day and between 90-600 m at night (large specimens between 200 and 400 m) (Ref. 4479). Size stratification with depth at night (Ref. 4775). Epipelagic to mesopelagic (Ref. 31442). Oviparous, with planktonic eggs and neustonic larvae (Ref. 31442).
