Characters

Slender, elongate, and attenuated, with a relatively small head, short jaws, and a very long tail. Pelvic fin has 7 rays. Snout is rounded and relatively compressed. Jaws are short and extend to about anterior margin of orbits. Head is about 15% of TL. Snout length is 23% to 29%, orbit is 25% to 32%, pre-maxilla length is 28% to 36%, chin barbel is 9% to 19%, and body depth at first dorsal fin origin is 74% to 82% of head length. Jaws have narrow band of relatively small, pointed teeth. Gill rakers are tuberculate and number 5 or 6 on first arch. Branchiostegal rays number 7. Pectoral fin is short and has 15 to 17 rays. First dorsal fin has 9 to 11 rays, first of which is splintlike and second, smooth and spinous. Second dorsal fin is widely separated from first and has shorter rays. Anus and urogenital openings are surrounded by broad naked black area (periproct) that extends anteriorly to insertion of pelvic fin. Scales have few upright spinules.
Color is brown to black.
