Elongate, slender, and moderately compressed body; lower jaw slightly curved upward; dorsal fin origin slightly anterior to pelvic fin insertion; body depth 6-7.3% SL; head length 23.3-25.6% SL; snout length 13.2-14.7% SL; premaxilla with 3 depressible canine teeth anteriorly and 14-20 fixed uniserial teeth posteriorly; lower jaw with 6 or 7 moderate-sized depressible canine teeth; vomer lacks teeth; palatine with 2-4 large depressible canine teeth anteriorly and 2-4 fixed uniserial teeth posteriorly; first gill arch with 1 or 2 'gill teeth' on epibranch, 1 in corner, and 16-22 on lower limb; gill membranes joined at end of upper jaw and free of isthmus; pectoral fin inserts on lower one-third of flank with 12 or 13 rays; dorsal fin originates anterior to anus with 10 rays; pelvic fin inserts posterior to midlength of body with 9 rays; anal fin with 30 or 31 rays; luminous organs absent; scales absent except for embedded lateral line scales; lateral line scale sections diamond-shaped, about 1.5 times longer than high, numbering 57-60; tympana Y-shaped; vertebrae number 75-78
