Characters
Elongate, slender, and moderately compressed body; lower jaw slightly curved upward; dorsal fin origin slightly posterior to pelvic fin origin. Body depth 6.6% to 6.8%, head length 24% to 24.5%, and snout length 13.4% to 13.6% of SL. Premaxilla with 4 unequal-sized depressible canine teeth anteriorly and small recurved teeth in single row posteriorly. Lower jaw with 6 moderate-sized depressible canine teeth, each with 1 short fixed tooth. Vomer lacks teeth. Gill membranes joined at end of upper jaw and free of isthmus. First gill arch with 4 'gill teeth' on epibranch, 1 in corner, and 16 to 19 on lower limb. Pectoral fin inserts on lower one-third of flank with 11 rays. Dorsal fin with 10 rays. Pelvic fin inserts posterior to midlength of body with 9 rays. Anal fin with 28 rays. Luminous organs absent. Scales absent except for embedded lateral line scales. Lateral line scale sections diamond shaped, about 1.5 times longer than high, numbering 60 to 62. Tympana (osseous scale plates) Y-shaped, narrow posteriorly and forked anteriorly. Vertebrae number 75 or 76.
Body sparsely covered except for four saddles on dorsal surface and melanophores of lateral line.
