Elongate and attenuated body shape; acute snout; large jaws; relatively long chin barbel; snout length 23% to 29% of head length; head 16% to 18% of TL; upper jaw with broad band of teeth; lower jaw with 2-4 rows of teeth; gill rakers tuberculate, 8-12 on inner side of first arch; branchiostegal rays 7; pectoral fin rays 20-22; first dorsal fin rays 13-16; pelvic fin rays 9-10; scales with slender, conical spinules; abdomen with small, oval-shaped naked black area associated with light organ; anus and urogenital openings surrounded by oval-shaped naked black area (periproct); swim bladder with two retia mirabilia.
Brown, with head dark brown, buccal membrane light, and first dorsal fin blackish.

East coast of Florida to northeastern Gulf of Mexico
